Introduced in 1908 in the repertoire of movements made by Longines, the 19.75N, a 19 line “open-face lever winding mechanism”, was the new version of a calibre created in the 1890s. With a visible winding mechanism and a large bridge that supported the seconds wheel and the escape wheel, this movement had the same structural characteristics as the 19.75 made in 1897. It differed from the earlier version mainly by the replacement of the components that made up the ebauche (base movement). During this decade, the machining of components – at least those that were manufactured at Longines – had advanced; at least according to what can be inferred from the appearance of thin or lowered versions of existing calibres.
The 19.75N belonged technically to a family of robust movements for which the principles of construction had been established in the 1890s and which was used as a basis for new calibres until the 1930s.
